Edinburgh has a long tradition in engineering and energy research with a particular focus in recent years in artificial intelligence & robotics; data & communications technologies; materials & processes; renewable energy; carbon capture & storage; and energy systems. Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh jointly lead academic engineering activity with over 280 academic staff under the banner of the Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering (ERPE). Major engineering companies in the local area include Babcock, Leonardo, Intel, Renishaw and Ineos, all of whom interact closely with ERPE.

The city also has an ambitious target to become a net zero city by 2030. The Edinburgh Climate Compact is working with businesses and employers in the city to radically reduce Edinburgh's carbon emissions.
